ID:TS Running on the Toshiba 5100
Quarterdeck Technical Note
by Stan Young
Q: How should I configure QEMM-386 or DESQview 386 to run on my
Toshiba 5100 (or 5200)
QEMM-386 can be used as an expanded memory manager on the Toshiba
5100, but normally requires some changes in the default
configuration of the Toshiba.
Under the default configuration, the Toshiba 5100 does not have
any extended memory, but actually has expanded memory hardware
and an expanded memory driver. Under the default Toshiba setup,
QEMM will either not see any extended memory to map and refuse to
load, or will not work properly.
To set the machine up properly, you need to run the Toshiba Setup
utility and configure 640K of base memory and all of the rest of
the memory as extended memory. There should be no expanded
memory configured.
Once the hardware has been set up to see all of the memory above
640K as extended memory, you should edit the CONFIG.SYS file on
the machine and remove the expanded memory driver if one is being
loaded. We believe this file is called EMM.SYS, but you may want
to consult your Toshiba manual to be sure.
After the expanded memory driver has been removed, you may run
the QEMMINST program to install QEMM and QEMM should be able to
operate properly on the machine for DESQview and other programs
that might require EMS 4.0 memory.
